• Introduction to R 

This workshop gets you started with using R. The session introduces the RStudio interface and key constructs of R, how to read files of various formats, when and how to work with different data types, and essentials of visualizing data.  There are two sessions of this workshop both held at Academic Building 4F Room 400A Curiosity Lab.

Online Workshops

• Survey Design with Qualtrics (Online Workshop) Wednesday, 7 October 9 AM – 11 AM (China Standard Time)

An introduction to the creation, collection, distribution, and analysis of online surveys using Qualtrics – an online survey platform. Hands-on class taught with practical examples in a lab with computers. This workshop will be held via ​Zoom, so you can attend from the comfort of your dorm or apartment. • Python for Harvesting Data on the Web Thursday, 8 October 9 AM – 10:30 AM (China Standard Time)

This session is an intermediate-to-advanced level class that offers some ideas for how to approach common data wrangling needs in research.  This course focuses on obtaining data and loading it into a suitable data “container” for analysis, often via a web interface, especially an API; parsing data retrieved via an API and turning it into a useful object for manipulation and analysis; performing some basic summary counts of records in a dataset and work up quick visualizations. Prerequisites:

• Familiarity with Pandas, Numpy, and core Python objects types (lists, dictionaries, strings, numbers)
• Familiarity with common data storage file types such as JSON and CSV
• Comfort with using Jupyter Notebooks for writing code
• Understanding of (or comfort with learning about) principles of writing code to make http (web) requests

• Understand the building blocks of a Pandas dataframe
• Know how to make a dataframe and how to load it with data
• Filtering, selecting, and other common operations needed to focus on a subset of a dataframe
• Updating values
• Table joins and merges
• Exporting a dataframe to a saved file
